Researchers from the Department of biotechnology and systems biology, in collaboration with colleagues from the National institute of chemistry and from CEITEC, Brno, Czech Republic, have published a high resolution structure of the Potato virus Y virion determined by cryogenic electron microscopy in the prestigious journal Science Advances (https://advances.sciencemag.org/content/5/7/eaaw3808).

Potato virus Y (family Potyviridae) is the 5th most economically important plant virus. The obtained structure is the highest resolution and the most complete potyviral structure published so far, which enables insight into the importance of the N terminal and C terminal regions of the viral Coat protein for the viral infection cycle. Researchers from NIB contributed to the research with their expertise of the potato virus Y, transmission electron microscopy and knowledge of systemic biology in virus-host interactions. The generated knowledge will allow deeper research on the virus infection mechanism, i.e. interaction with insect vectors, replication, assembly and cell to cell movement, with the aim to design new strategies for protection of potato against this devastating virus.

Research on NIB was funded by the project J7 7248.

The achievement was presented at National Institute of Chemistry.
