Research


The core activity of the National Institute of Biology is basic and applied research. They apply to various areas of biology (ecology, plant and animal physiology…) and medicine (molecular and genetic research).

Applied research is an extension of basic research and relate foremost to protection of the environment, biotechnology and agriculture.

The research is funded from public funds and by various users and donors.

Research programs and ARRS projects


Research programmes and projects of the Slovenian Research Agency (the ARRS) are the most important part of activities of the National Institute of Biology (the NIB) in terms of substance and finance.

The bulk of basic research is performed within the research programmes and a large part of projects is oriented towards development and application.

Financially, they represent roughly 60% of all revenues of the NIB.

International Projects


Research activities at the NIB are performed in close co-operation with related institutions abroad.


This co-operation is formal through bilateral (with European countries, USA, Australia, China and South American countries) and multilateral projects (financed through research framework programmes of the EU, structural funds of the EU, various UN programmes…) as well as informal, namely various short visits, participation at congresses, exchange of literature, technology and experience.

 

Applied and Developmental Research


Applied and development research is an important part of activities of the NIB.

Contracting entities for research are foremost ministries and their agencies as a part of their performing public service, as well as municipalities and companies from various industries, notably pharmaceutical and food processing. The most important partners of the NIB with that regard include the Ministry of the Environment, Spatial Planning and Energy, Agency of the RS for the Environment, Lek, Radenska, Town Municipality of Koper…
