Prof Dr Maja Ravnikar is the director of the National Institute of Biology and a full professor of biotechnology at the University of Nova Gorica, Jožef Stefan International Undergraduate School and University of Ljubljana. She is an expert in virology, biotechnology, molecular diagnostics, high-throughput sequencing, characterization of therapeutic viruses, and the initiator of research into the epidemiology of viruses in wastewater, including SARS-CoV-2. She was mentoring and co-mentoring 17 doctoral students and is author of over 170 research articles and patents. She is the leader of many national and internataional projects including the European project Inextvir MSA-ITN. She is co-founder of the high-tech company Bioistemika, as one of the result of a long history of working with industry. She is a specialist in plant health and plant virology, and was appointed as a member of several committees of the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization from 2004 to 2021 by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia. She is also a member of the European Reference Laboratory for Plant Viruses, Viroids and Phytoplasmas. Until her nomination as the director, she was the head of the Department of Biotechnology and Systems Biology with 70 employees from 1999 to 2021.
