“Genetically modified organisms - what awaits us in the future?”

 

In the organization of National Institute of Biology and Slovenian Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning (MESP), 2nd of December 2020, a virtual workshop “Genetically modified organisms - what awaits us in the future?” was organized. The workshop was dedicated to new information on genetically modified organisms (GMOs), theirs legislation and detection. The guest Dr. Nancy Roosens from Belgian federal research centre Sciensano presented the hot and challenging topic on detection of genetically modified microorganisms (GMMs).. Representatives of Ministries and inspection services presented current EU regulations on GMOs and GMMs from Slovenian perspective.

National Institute of Biology is National reference laboratory for detection of GMOs. Lecturers presented current activities of NIB and general novelties in GMOs.

The workshop brought together representatives of Slovenian Ministry of environment and spatial planning, Ministry of agriculture, forest and food, including their inspection bodies, Administration RS for food safety, veterinary and plant protection and Financial Ministry. The workshop was also opportunity to discuss the official control on GMOs in Slovenia and future perspectives.
