Evolutionary history of African hermit spiders: Biogeographic imprints of natural versus anthropogenic transoceanic dispersal

Project coordinator: Matjaž Kuntner, PhD

Code: J1-60005

Duration: 1.1.2025-31.12.2027

Biodiversity science aims to robustly test evolutionary hypotheses, thereby simultaneously glimpse into the Earth’s past as well as predict future patterns in the light of global changes. For this purpose, the toolkits available today in the fields as diverse as molecular ecology, taxonomy, phylogenomics, biogeography, evolution, and conservation biology are timely and appropriate. Our project focuses on integrating these latest biodiversity approaches on a question that pertains to intercontinental colonization and potential invasion of a species, in order to test whether or not humans have played prominently in assisting this spread. A scientific approach to questions like this is necessary for an impartial look into how evolution and ecology may be co-shaped by natural and anthropogenic forces that coexist in the Anthropocene.
