From December 28 to December 30, 2012, the 6th festival of films on nature and outdoor sports BOFF – Bovec Outdoor Film Festival took place, in which National Institute of Biology's documentary “WWW-H / Why? Where? When? How?” was awarded a prize for the best film in the category nature and ecology.

The jury's decision was explained by a jury member, Nejc Saje: “Why? Where? When? How?” is a story on a topic that many people are aware of but is scientifically grounded here. It has a much more powerful effect on a viewer as if it the film were made in a more popular way. The recordings are excellent; the pictures that support the story were carefully selected. Prof. dr. Bojan Sedmak is to thank for the idea and the text, and the ideas for the excellent film were contributed also by other researchers of our institute. This is the third prize for the NIB's film.

The highest – first prize “Rajsko drevo” was awarded to NIB's film “"www.h / Why? Where? When? How?” at the first Slovene international festival of natural scientific film G-FEST that took place in the enchanting environment of the town of Grad in the Goričko region from May 24 to May 25, 2012. The prize was given to the authors by the jury composed of Leon Krpič, Aleš Valič and Vojko Anzeljc.

In 2012, NIB received the award “Prometej znanosti za odličnost v komuniciranju” from the Slovene Scientific Foundation. A special stress among all activities carried out to promote science was given to the documentary “www.h / Why? Where? When? How?” which narrates about the importance of biology and our work for the environment and health. The film was shot to celebrate the 50th anniversary of our institute's work. The film was perfectly accepted among viewers (pupils, students, professional public and others) and was highly praised. The film was also presented at the solemn award giving ceremony »Prometej znanosti«.

Film www.h is a blend of scientific thought and visual communication. Its provocative approach makes us contemplate our existence and actions, our goals and the role of science in society. A modern way of life that subjects us to inexorable rush claims answers; and yet it allows us no time to confront fundamental questions Why? Where? When? How? This is also the title of the film intended for global audience and entitled in a way of the internet with Why, Where, When and How. Initially, the authors establish that "science and philosophy - namely love for wisdom - are one. At the very beginning and at the end, the authors deal with fundamental existential questions. All scientific tools are in service of our conscience. Scientists are not the first aid in the failed investments of the human kind. They are not rescuers as they know all answers, they are unpleasant creators because they ask proper questions: why, where, when and how."

The conveyed message is: "Only when both science and each individual come up with answers to proper questions there is hope that our life may take the right direction.”

The authors of the film Bojan Sedmak, Tomaž Letnar, Rado Likon, Jasna Hribernik and Tamara Lah Turnšek have merged the remorseless logic of scientific thinking with the sensitivity of art. Today, we are the creators of the world and the life on it. As such, we create our future, each of us separately and all together! Although many people think that we are only chess figures on a chessboard of nature or mysterious unknown forces, the film teaches us about the opposite - we are the creators of our happiness and destiny and of the happiness and destiny of future generations; more than we are allowed to. Isn't this a sufficient reason that calls for an in-depth look at how to act?

The closing thoughts may long resound in our minds: we have put the heaven above the clouds only to escape the death on the Earth. The desire to leave the Earth and conquer the space, to mingle with gods is born out of our fear of death. But as it is, we are just biological creatures that nature has created for the lower areas of the atmosphere. We are an inseparable part of nature. We are nature. And the sanctity of life derives from joint responsibility.

The film premiere was at the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the National Institute of Biology in October 2010.
