Maja Ravnikar finished her PhD thesis in 1991 at the Department of Biology, Biotechnical Faculty, University of Ljubljana. She was elected to the position of associate professor for the field of Biotechnology by the University of Ljubljana.
Employment and management functions:
She is employed at the National Institute of Biology since 1984. She is the head of the Department of Biotechnology and Systems Biology since 2001 and scientific leader of the Instrumental Centre Planta since 1994. From 1999 she is leading the research programme “Biotechnology and Plant Systems Biology”. The programme was evaluated by the Slovenian Research Agency and considered as one of the top 19 research programmes in 2004 and got the longest prolongation period in 2009. Together with the research team she has established the research work on plant biotechnology and pathology and developed many modern molecular methods and systems biology tools. She leads authorized diagnostic laboratory for determination of micro-organisms for the Phytosanitary Administration (MAFF), phytosanitary inspection and is closely involved with the business companies.
Functions in Slovene and international committee:
From 1995 to 2005 she was, as NIB representative, member of the Management Board of the Technological Park Ljubljana and member of the Council for Technology Development at the Ministry of the Economy. From 2006 she is member of the scientific research council for life sciences at the Slovenian Research Agency. From 2008 she is member of the First Developmental group “For Life and Health” at the Council of the Government Office RS for Competitiveness. She is a member of the Management Committee of the Centre for Functional Genomics and Bio-Chips technology, she is a member of the council. During the activity of the Centre of excellence for Pharmaceutical and biotechnology she has been the representative of the NIB. She is a member of the council Centre of Excellence for biosensors, instrumentation and process control-COBIK. She is member of the Committee for Plant Health at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food, and member of the expert group for plant health protection in fruit tree, grape vine and hop growing. She is member of the Expert board for target research projects at the Ministry of defence. As Slovenian representative, she is member of the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organisation (EPPO) in the Panel of quality assurance. Founding member of European association for phytobacteriology, founded in 2007 and PVY wide organisation founded in 2008. She is a member of the international net for research of viruses in environment PVEN. She was the president of the organising and scientific committee of 3rd International Conference of the International working group on legume and vegetable viruses (IWGLVV) and member at boards of many international and national congresses. She gained few awards, among them, state award for scientific achievements.
