Research Infrastructure

National Institute of Biology (NIB) is located at two premises: headquarters and 3 research groups are located in Ljubljana, while Marine Biology Station Piran is situated in Piran. Its highly skilled and flexible scientific staff has advanced and up-to-date research instrumentation and facilities at their disposal. National Institute of Biology (NIB), Department of Biotechnology and Systems Biology,is accredited by Slovenian Accreditation with accreditation number LP-028 in the field of testing (SIST EN ISO/IEC 17025) for detection of GMOs and microorganisms – plant pathogens«.. We have also acquired the Good Laboratory Practice Certificate.

Infrastructural Centres

Infrastructural Centres (IC) manage expensive scientific research equipment that enables sophisticated technological research. The use and maintenance of this equipment requires in-depth knowledge. The two infrastructural centres
at NIB are:


The operation of ICs is mostly financed by the Slovenian Research Agency in the scope of the NIB infrastructure programme. Each IC provides services and equipment for the public and the private sector.
