Detection of microorganisms – plant pathogens
National Institute of Biology (NIB) is authorized by the Administration of the Republic of Slovenia for Food Safety, Veterinary Sector and Plant Protection (UVHVVR) as official laboratory for performing analyses of plant pests, such as bacteria, phytoplasmas, viruses and viroids. UVHVVR has also nominated NIB to perform tasks of National reference laboratory (NRL) for plant pathogenic bacteria and for leading the consortium of NRL for viruses, viroids and phytoplasmas (partners in consortium: Agricultural Institute of Slovenia, Slovenian Institute of Hop Research and Brewing). Since 2019 NIB has been a partner in two European Union Reference Laboratories (EURL): EURL for bacteriology (leading by NWVA from the Netherlands; partners: CREA from Italy, ILVO from Belgium, NIB) and EURL for viruses, viroids and phytoplasmas (leading by NWVA from the Netherlands; partners: CREA from Italy, NIB). EURLs provide assistance to National Reference Laboratories to avoid uncertain diagnosis. The work of the EURLs is to improve tests for diagnosing plant pests to ensure uniform quality across the EU. Furthermore, they share their developments in technical innovation, as well as providing practice on diagnostic issues. A major task is the organization of Test Performance Studies and Proficiency Tests.
