About ISS 2013 / Part A

This year’s the Part A of School ISS-2013 will focus on cancer research and treatment, with an emphasis on stem cells and methodologies used in experimental and translational cancer research. Priority will be given to the translation of basic research to the clinics, as close bi-directional link  of the two are of crucial importance for successful treatment of the disease. This is of particular importance in modern cell therapies. For this reason, this year the School is associated with the two preceding meetings as related events.

The course is designed for postdoctoral fellows, newly independent scientists, graduate students, and advanced senior undergraduate students who are seeking training in the state-of-the-art research strategies and methods needed to pursue studies in basic research and clinical application and practice.Students in the fields of biochemistry, biology, biotechnology, pharmacy and medicine interested in the mechanisms of cancer progression and methodology in cancer research and treatment are invited to apply.

The course consists of daily lectures from an international panel of invited lecturers, discussions and informal seminars, laboratory exercises and demonstrations, a poster session and one-on-one tutorials. Participating faculty are recognised experts from academia, clinic and industry. The participants will receive a diverse and interdisciplinary overview of the problems and solutions of modern diagnostic and treatment modalities in various types of cancer. Lecturers will review principles of techniques used in basic stem cell research with experimental guidelines for their application in animal experiments. Finally, modern approaches in clinical practice via case studies and epidemiological studies will be presented. In addition to the lectures, laboratory demonstrations or simulations, when the former is not feasible, will complement the talks.

At the beginning of the School, the students will be grouped in interdisciplinary and international classes to facilitate discussions and knowledge exchange on the topics at smaller study groups. These will be oriented into problems solving approach, guided by one of the lecturers. Participants are also encouraged to present the topic of their own research or occupation at poster sessions and discussions in classes.

ISS 2013 / Part B  will be dedicated to the technologies of stem cells therapies in regenerative medicine, including cancer .IS 2013 PART -II will be held at the same location in August 24. 31
