»Researcher Position in Bioinformatics / Computer Science / Biology or Related Fields«
The application deadline is March 15, 2026.
We are advertising a position for a doctoral or postdoctoral researcher who will join the established Omics Approaches research group at the Department of Biotechnology and Systems Biology.
About the Research Group
The group is interdisciplinary and includes biologists, microbiologists, biochemists, biotechnologists, mathematicians, computer scientists, and engineers. Our research focuses on understanding how living organisms interact with their environment, with a primary emphasis on plant biology. Our main goal is to improve crop production in a way that ensures sufficient food supply while minimizing environmental impact. We develop methodologies and models for integrating data obtained from high‑throughput omics technologies and cell biology approaches. In parallel, we also develop functional genomics methods to experimentally test hypotheses generated through modeling.
About the Department
At the Department of Biotechnology and Systems Biology (FITO), we generate cutting‑edge knowledge aimed at a holistic understanding of biological processes, with a strong focus on complex biological systems. This is achieved through the use of state‑of‑the‑art equipment, participation in European research infrastructures, and involvement in numerous European and other international projects. The department is well known for its work in plant systems biology, bioinformatics and statistics, virus and bacterial research, genetically modified organism research, and therapeutic viruses. The transfer of top‑level research into biotechnological applications has resulted in the establishment of two high‑tech spin‑off companies in the last ten years.
About the Institute
The National Institute of Biology (NIB) is the largest independent public research institute in the natural sciences in Slovenia. Its core activities include basic, developmental, and applied research in natural sciences and biotechnology, biomedicine, marine biology, ecology, and agriculture.
Planned Research Work
The selected candidate’s research will focus on multi‑omics data analysis, machine learning, and the extension of mechanistic models of plant signaling (skm.nib.si) and plant metabolism (https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2502160122), with the goal of understanding the mechanisms by which potato plants respond to environmental stresses or diseases. The work will involve collaboration with international research groups and participation in multiple projects funded by Slovenian and European research agencies.
What We Expect
We are looking for a candidate with a strong motivation for research, creativity, initiative, sound critical judgment, the ability to work in a team, reliability, and a positive attitude. Due to international collaborations, good command of English is essential. A background in biology, computer science, biochemistry, biotechnology, mathematics, or a related field is expected. For a position of doctoral researcher awarded MSc is required and for a postdoctoral position awarded PhD is required. Experience with at least one programming language (e.g. Python, R) is desirable.
What We Offer
The researcher will conduct their work in laboratories equipped with state‑of‑the‑art research infrastructure within the NIB biotechnology hub, together with colleagues from Slovenia and the international research community. The candidate will participate in international projects and collaborate with leading research institutes in Slovenia and abroad, or with high‑tech Slovenian and international companies that are our partners. Through research activities and participation in various workshops, the candidate will acquire skills that support a successful career after completion of doctoral or postdoctoral training, strong employability, and personal development, including critical thinking, communication with diverse audiences, teamwork, project planning and management, and familiarity with quality assurance systems. A positive and supportive working atmosphere is also one of the group’s goals.
Start Date and Duration
The position can start as soon as possible by agreement with the candidate. Funding is provided for the duration of doctoral studies (for PhD candidates) or for one year with the possibility of extension through additional projects (for postdoctoral researchers).
