The 50th anniversary of the National Institute of Biology was held under the honorary patronage of Mr. Borut Pahor, the Slovenian Prime Minister
On Monday 25th of October 2010, National Institute of Biology celebrated his 50th anniversary. The ceremony was held under the honorary patronage and the solemn address by Mr. Borut Pahor, the Slovenian Prime Minister.
On this occasion the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr. Danilo Türk, sent a Letter of Congratulation to the National Institute of Biology that was read at the ceremony. Mr. Gregor Golobič, the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Dr. Radovan Stanislav Pejovnik, the Rector of the University of Ljubljana, Prof. Dr. Rado Bohinc, the Rector of the University of Primorska, Dr. Franci Demšar, the Director of The Slovenian Research Agency and many others respective and important guests participated at that ceremony.
For the very first time in the history of National Institute of Biology the Awards and Recognitions named after the Prof. Dr. Miroslav Zei, the founder of the NIB were conferred.
Prof. Dr. Miroslav Zei was the author of numerous scientific books and journal article, an internationally recognized scientist in the field of biology, oceanography, ichthyology, marine biology, the teacher and writer. He was awarded with the Golden Order of Merit by the President of the Republic of Slovenia for his life's achievements s and the contribution to the Slovenian biological science and its international reputation. He also received a number of local and international awards.
In the future the Zei awards and recognitions will be conferred each year to the scientists for their outstanding achievements in basic and applied research in the field of life sciences and for contributing to the vision and mission of the NIB.
The first recipients of Zei awards and recognitions selected by Scientific Council of NIB are: Prof. Dr. Kristina Gruden and Prof. Dr. Gregor Anderluh for their outstanding achievements in the field of research covered by the National Institute, Prof. Dr. Boris Sket was awarded for his important achievements in the field of zoology.
The Title of the “Honorary Member” of the National Institute of Biology was given to Prof. Dr. Kazimir Tarman and to Prof. Dr. Guy Van Den Eede.

The new artistic documentary film about the importance of biology and the contribution of our work to solving the environmental and health problems was also presented at this event for the first time. The film also responds to other existential questions of the modern world and society, caught between technological development and the preservation of life balance. The documentary was made in cooperation between our scientists and artists, directed by Mrs. Jasna Hribernik, the screenwriter Mr. Tomaž Letnar and as viewed through the eyes of the camera, held by Mr. Rado Likon.
