Saving the Mediterranean Shag

Saving the Mediterranean Shag

Today we saved the Mediterranean Shag, caught in the fishing nets...

The Mediterranean Shag (Phalacrocorax aristotelis desmarestii) belongs to the family of cormorans (Phalacrocoracidae). It can be found only in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea. This is a sea bird that nests on the rocky shores and feeds in the sea. More about the species can be found here.

After the rescue our bird was immediately swimming and diving.

A video about this rescue operation can be viewed here.

We acknowledge Franc Kravos and Vladimir Bernetič for the photographs, Borut Mavrič for producing the video and Lovrenc Lipej, Mauro Grbec and of course Domen Trkov for the rescue!
