The recognition awards for »Prometeus of science for excelence in communication« for the year 2016 to the biodiversity group at the Marine Biology Station of the National Institute of Biology

On the 16th January 2017, the Slovenian Scientific Foundation declared recognition awards for Prometeus of Science for excellence in communication for the year 2016. Among award winners was also the biodiversity group working at the Marine Biology Station Piran of the National Institute of Biology, consisting of prof. dr. Lovrenc Lipej, dr. Martina Orlando Bonaca, dr. Borut Mavrič and mag. Domen Trkov.

The group was awarded for its long lasting encouragement of the understanding of natural processes in the sea and impacts of anthropogenic activities on the marine environment. The main achievements of the group that lead to the award are:

  • - biodiversity research and publishing of the results within scientific community,
  • - popularisation of natural sciences with the main focus on biological richness of the Slovenian sea, and
  • - editorial work of the members of the group, among which the most notable are those related to the scientific journal Annales series historia naturalis, with its 25 continuous issuing and three recent scientific monographies, dealing with the poorly known world of biogenic formations in the Slovenian sea (Biodiverziteta biogenih formacij, La biodiversità delle formazioni biogene and Biogenic formations in the Slovenian Sea).
