Povzetek:
»The Mediterranean stony coral Cladocora caespitosa (Linnaeus, 1767) is a colonial, endemic, shallow-water coral. It fulfils the three requisites of a good indicator: sensibility to changes (temperature, pH, diseases), measurability of changes and widespread distribution. Moreover is capable to host a diversified faunal assemblage, which is still poorly known. Species-area relationship (SAR) describes the pattern in which the species richness increases with area and is considered a good tool to estimate biodiversity. In order to test the importance of C. caespitosa for biodiversity, SAR methods were applied at different scales in areas where this species was particularly abundant. Investigations were performed at 3 different levels: “microscale”, that is biodiversity within C. caespitosa colonies, “mesoscale”, that is biodiversity among colonies, and “macroscale”, that is fish assemblages associated with the area dominated by C. caespitosa. A combination of traditional methods (colony collection, sorting and determination) and non-destructive SCUBA diving methods (quadrat analysis and linear transect). High diversity was observed, some rare and poorly known species were found, together with an important component of juveniles. Our results proved the importance of C. caespitosa as a habitat builder. SAR methods proved to be suitable for biodiversity estimates even at small scale, and resulted promising tools to be applied in other Mediterranean regions, and in other sensible habitats.«

Vljudno vabljeni! Seminar bo potekal v angleškem jeziku.
