Povzetek:
»The last two decades have witnessed a rapidly growing interest among ecologists in spider parasitoids and their intimate associations with spider hosts. The current state of knowledge on the ecology of such parasitoids and their interactions with their hosts is already at a level which enables the synthesis of data on the ecology of these highly specialised parasitoids and opens up new directions for research into the coevolution of parasitoids and their hosts. The seminar will reveal why Darwin wasps (Polysphincta group of genera) are an excellent model for testing hypotheses on parasitoid evolution in association with specific hosts. Darwin wasps have evolved an association with spider hosts only in the Polysphincta group of genera (Ichneumonidae). Their ecology co-evolved with the ecological and behavioural traits of their preferred host. The seminar will outline a synthesis of knowledge on the ecology of Darwin wasps associated with spiders. Specifically, coexistence of Darwin wasps in Europe is maintained via niche partitioning, particularly strict host specificity. Wasps have evolved various strategies of host utilisation adjusted to the natural history of dangerous spider hosts. Spider host utilisation by Darwin wasps is achieved by a combination of various ecological, behavioural, morphological and physiological adaptations.«
